Visions of Growth: Economic Prosperity by Cheryl Moggs OAM

Celebrating NAIDOC Week

NAIDOC Week will be held from Sunday 7 July to Sunday 14 July 2024 and is a time to celebrate and recognise the history, culture, and achievements of First Nations peoples.

NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all of us to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth. NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee, which was born from times of remembrance and protest dating back to the 1920s. Over time, it has evolved into a week-long event that takes place annually in early July.

NAIDOC Week provides an opportunity for all of us to come together and acknowledge the rich and diverse Indigenous heritage of our country through various activities, including art exhibitions, cultural performances, sporting events, community gatherings, and education. It aims to promote understanding, respect, and reconciliation while recognising the contributions and resilience of Indigenous communities in shaping our national identity.

This year we celebrate NAIDOC Week with, Visions of Growth: Economic Prosperity an artwork created by Cheryl Moggs OAM, a proud Bigambul woman, Aboriginal visual artist, teacher, weaver, cultural leader and elder from the Goondiwindi region in south-west Queensland. Visions of Growth: Economic Prosperity tells the story of the traditional economies of First Nations people — one of sustainability and resilience, interwoven within 60,000 years of Aboriginal traditional trading practices. In doing so, the painting depicts aspirations for self-determination and economic prosperity. The artwork embodies the concept of one.
